Columbia’s fire of 1886 almost destroyed the city

Truly the fire of March 23, 1886, was the largest ever in Columbia. It consumed the entire block of Broadway to Cherry Street between Ninth and Tenth streets. The only exception was the Missouri Statesman newspaper building located on the southeast corner of Ninth and Broadway (now the Copeland Law Firm).
