Double your workout: Twins teach Pilates online

With time and economic crunches, it’s not always easy to make it to the gym. Fitness videos have long been an alternative for those who prefer to work out at home, and with podcasts and exercise Web sites becoming more popular, it’s easier to find fresh workouts catered to your skill level.

Katherine and Kimberly Corps, owners of New York studio Pilates on Fifth and co-founders of The Pilates Academy International, have been updating their library of free workout videos on their Web site, ultimatepilatesworkouts.com, since October.

The twin sisters add new workouts every month, including workouts for beginners and advanced Pilates practitioners.

Many of the exercises don’t require anything more than a mat, but those with access to Pilates equipment such as the Reformer and the Cadillac will find appropriate workouts. There are also workouts using stability balls, Pilates rings and Bosu balance trainers.

"We try to do two mat" workouts "and two Reformers once a month, then as demand dictates, we add different equipment workouts," Kimberly said.

Because quality of movement is a key component of Pilates, there are technique videos that give detailed instruction on proper form and movement. These videos help beginners become familiar with terms and serve as reminders to those who might be experiencing difficulties with some exercises.

In the future, the sisters said, they hope to expand their Web site to include more specialized videos, including a feature that allows users to build their own workouts.

"We take every single mat exercise as an individual file, so it will be a customizable playlist," Kimberly said. "You can click and drag from the playlist and put them in any order you want. Then you can download it and have a personal workout video."

The sisters also will build on their specialized collection of workouts, adding videos for new mothers and for those who might not have been able to participate in Pilates before because of spinal problems.

These videos are free to watch online and can be downloaded with a paid membership.

The twins also have a weekly podcast through iTunes on which they answer Pilates questions.
