NINTH DISTRICT: CANDIDATE Q&A
Question: Should the federal fuel tax be temporarily suspended?

DEMOCRATS
State Rep. Judy Baker, D-Columbia No The two-term lawmaker said suspending the tax would jeopardize thousands of construction jobs for meager savings that might not get passed on to consumers. Instead, Baker said, the country needs to have a comprehensive approach toward bolstering alternative energy sources and increasing refinery capacity.
Former House Speaker Steve Gaw, D-Moberly Maybe “My belief is that we ought to seek some other avenue to get some relief besides that. If there is no other option, then I would consider doing that.”
Marion County Presiding Commissioner Lyndon Bode Yes Bode said there should be a reprieve in gas taxes from Memorial Day to Labor Day; he added that any tax credits to oil companies should be suspended until new refineries are built.
Former Senate Minority Leader Ken Jacob, D-Columbia Yes With people suffering from the effects of high prices, Jacob said, a reprieve in taxes would increase the issue’s prominence.

REPUBLICANS

State Rep. Bob Onder, R-Lake Saint Louis Yes “As a temporary measure to ease the impact of this fuel crisis on Americans’ pocketbooks, I would support that.”
State Rep. Danie Moore, R-Fulton No Moore said the move would have a detrimental effect on road construction. She also questioned whether savings would actually be passed on to consumers.
Former State Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-St. Elizabeth No The former tourism director said suspending the tax would hurt efforts for road construction. He said a better short-term solution to a complicated problem would be to suspend shipments of oil to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Former MU football player Brock Olivo Yes “I believe anything that offers immediate relief is good at this point.”
