Four children hurt in two-car collision

Four children were injured yesterday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision in central Columbia, police said.

The children, ages 5 to 11, were passengers in a 2001 Kia Rio at 4:35 p.m. that was northbound in the 800 block of Washington Avenue, police said in a news release. A southbound Ford Mustang driven by Thomas Johnson, 19, of Columbia went out of control and crossed into the northbound lane in front of the Kia, police said. The Mustang struck the right rear quarter panel of the Kia, police said.

Police did not identify the four children, who were taken to University Hospital with what were considered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver of the Kia - Vealeta Davis, 34, of Columbia - was treated by medics and Johnson was taken to Boone Hospital Center for treatment.

Both drivers and the children wore seat belts at the time of the wreck, police said.
