City seeks comment on fire station bronze

A bronze relief sculpture mounted on a masonry wall that would stand outside Fire Station No. 7 on Green Meadows Road is the most recent project proposal for the city’s Percent for Art program.

The public is invited to comment on conceptual designs for the work by Mid-Missouri artist Jane Mudd, and the city is accepting input through Oct. 9. Images and an online comment form are available on the city’s Web site at www.gocolumbiamo.com. Click on "Parks, Recreation and the Arts" on the left-hand side, then click "Office of Cultural Affairs" to find the link for public comment.

Comments also may be submitted by e-mailing oca@GoColumbiaMo .com, by mail to the Office of Cultural Affairs, P.O. Box 6015, Columbia, Mo., 65205; or by fax to (573) 874-7681.

The working title for the piece is "In Gratitude," and it will include a seating area where passers-by can rest and view the 32-inch-by-15-inch sculpture. Mudd said the work focuses on the themes of gratitude and thankfulness, and features a crowd of appreciative community members. The background depicts images from the fire department’s history.

"The ‘imagined’ characters in the crowd that will be sculpted into the bronze relief will represent a cross section of Columbia’s diversity for which it is so well known," Mudd said in a prepared statement.

After the public comment period, the city’s Standing Committee on Public Art will review the proposal and formulate a recommendation for the Office of Cultural Affairs. Final approval of the design will be determined by the Columbia City Council.
