THE TRIBUNE'S VIEW
Abortion

By HENRY J. WATERS III, Publisher, Columbia Daily Tribune
Polls consistently show Americans do not want abortion outlawed in the early months of pregnancy. No respondent will support the very idea of abortion, but that sentiment has nothing to do with making government policy. Prohibition does.

Debate caps McCain’s reversal of fortune
By E.J. DIONNE JR.
WASHINGTON - September began as John McCain’s month and ended as Barack Obama’s. McCain’s high-risk wagers aimed at shaking up the campaign turned into very bad investments. ON ETHICS
Stand up to others’ prejudice

By RANDY COHEN

By GEORGE F. WILL
WASHINGTON - Members of Congress are being exhorted to stampede, like lemmings in reverse, away from a postulated cliff. But some of the economic geographers who say they know that the cliff is there - and that the economy will plunge over it if Congress stops to think before empowering the secretary of the Treasury to control the flow of capital through the veins of American capitalism - are some of those experts who said in March that prophylactic federal intervention in the matter of Bear Stearns was necessary to contain the crisis.

Some casualties of war take time
By JOHN BERSIA
Among the issues that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and Republican standard-bearer John McCain should take up in this week’s presidential debate is the tragedy of delayed casualties from the U.S.-led intervention in Iraq.
