Reviewer returns to role-playing games

A couple of months ago, I lamented about the absurd length of today’s average game, claiming I’ve only beaten about 1 to 2 percent of all the RPGs I’ve ever played. This is completely true. What wasn’t said is how I had generally come to despise the genre that includes some of my favorite games of all time, the "Mother" series, and how I actively avoided buying or renting titles if the words "Final" or "Fantasy" were printed anywhere on the box.

As was expected, this year’s Roots ’N Blues ’N BBQ Festival features an extremely talented lineup. Kudos to the festival organizers for grabbing Buddy Guy, Del McCoury and Jerry Douglas, but perhaps the most laudable part of this year’s lineup is found not in its headliners but in its diversity.

At a time when bad vibes and cynicism seem to rule the box office, movies like "Ghost Town" feel like a breath of fresh air. Contrived and derivative as it is, this lightweight romantic comedy has a lot of heart, in all the right places.

The Moo-Dah Parade fills the streets Saturday with possible marching BBQ grill teams, the Mannequin Brigade, the Meadow Muffins and perhaps even a chance to spot Elvis.

The Déjà Vu Comedy Club rolls out two laugh machines this week with acts by Dustin Diamond, left, and Dave Landau, who will perform at 9:15 p.m. today and 8 and 10:15 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday at the club located at 405 Cherry St.
