Escape from cellar
KC only one game out of fourth place.

David DeJesus went 4 for 4 and Mike Aviles drove in two runs to lead visiting Kansas City to a 6-2 win in Detroit.

Detroit has lost 10 of 11, and is only one game ahead of last-place Kansas City in the American League Central.

Tigers slugger Gary Sheffield was suspended four games earlier in the day for brawling with Cleveland pitcher Fausto Carmona last week.

Kansas City’s Gil Meche (13-11) won for the third time in his last four starts.

Indians 4, Red Sox 3: Jensen Lewis and Cleveland watched Boston celebrate after winning the AL championship series last year. They aren’t interested in repeating that scene.

Lewis struck out Jed Lowrie with runners on second and third in the ninth inning, preserving the Indians’ win last night in their first game in Boston since the Red Sox beat them in the ALCS last season.

"It was just kind of reminiscent of last year," Lewis said. "Our feelings are still pretty fresh."

The Indians blew a 3-1 lead in the ALCS last season and lost the seventh game 11-2.

Boston, with six games left, fell 2½ games behind AL East leader Tampa Bay, which beat Baltimore 4-2.

Rays 4, Orioles 2: In Baltimore, Jason Bartlett doubled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning and Tampa Bay took another step toward its first AL East title.

The victory reduced the Rays’ magic number for winning the division crown to four after the Red Sox lost to the Indians.

Phillies 6, Braves 2: Pat Burrell got a curtain call, Rudy Seanez heard fans chanting his name and Jason Marquis sent the crowd into a frenzy without even being in the ballpark in Philadelphia.

Burrell hit a three-run homer in the eighth and the National League East-leading Phillies beat Atlanta last night for their 10th win in 11 games.

The Phillies reduced their magic number for clinching their second straight division title to four after the New York Mets lost 9-5 to Marquis, who hit a grand slam, and the Cubs to fall 2½ games back. Philadelphia’s magic number for clinching a playoff berth is three.

Cubs 9, Mets 5: In New York, Marquis became the second pitcher to hit a grand slam against the Mets this season and Chicago clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs while damaging New York’s postseason chances.

Struggling to avoid another late collapse, the Mets slipped 2½ games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East and had their wild-card lead cut to one game over idle Milwaukee.

Marquis (11-9) drove in five runs and pitched effectively into the seventh, a big game in his hometown with friends and family in the stands.
