Nazis plan
to march in capital
Demonstration set for same day as local event.

The National Socialist Movement, a group of neo-Nazis who plan to hold a demonstration in Columbia Nov. 8, also plans to demonstrate the same day in Jefferson City. Capt. Doug Shoemaker of the Jefferson City Police Department confirmed today police have received a permit request from the group asking to march there Nov. 8 and said that request is under internal review. Charles Wilson, a Kansas-based spokesman for the NSM, said marching in both Mid-Missouri cities had always been the group’s plan. Wilson, who identified himself as a "lieutenant" and "leader of the storm troopers," said the group will march at both sites regardless of whether they receive approval. "If they do, they do; if they don’t, they don’t," he said of city officials’ decisions on the group’s permit applications. "We do those for their convenience, not for ours. We don’t need a permit to walk around downtown." Columbia denied the group’s application because the date is the same as a University of Missouri home football game. Columbia Interim Police Chief Tom Dresner said there would not be enough law enforcement officers to work security at the game and at the neo-Nazis’ event. On March 10, 2007, about two dozen members of the group visited Columbia, attracting 300 to 400 spectators. Columbia police treated the event as a crowd-control risk, deploying about 110 public safety officers to ensure the procession went smoothly, an effort that cost the city about $40,000.
