Rich and polished
Men’s fall trends include cool tones, warm V-necks.

Men’s fashion doesn’t change as drastically from season to season as women’s fashion. But this fall, both are following many of the same trends.

For one, colors in cool tones are big. "For spring, it was kind of a bright orange and bright green. There are still some bright colors, but they’re a little richer," said Dave Danuser, owner of Bingham’s. "Instead of a bright orange, you’ll have a copper or a real rich orange."

And with rich color comes rich patterns. Clothing company Robert Graham, for instance, makes shirts using a bold pattern, like a stripe, on the shirt with a contrasting pattern, perhaps a paisley, on the inside of the collar and on the cuffs. Such unexpected pattern combinations provide new interest to a casual look when paired with a sports coat and no tie, Danuser said.

But even casual clothes are becoming more polished. "I’d say it’s back to being a little tweedier, a little more traditional, a little more classic," Danuser said.

Want to be the best-dressed man in the room? Try these trends.

● A collared shirt always looks good, but French cuffs add an extra air of sophistication, especially when worn with cufflinks. A knot or monogrammed oval is classic, but there’s something out there for every personality. Check antique shops and vintage clothing stores for truly unique pieces.

● Ditch the fleece pullover. With the right details, a sweater looks smart and sporty. V-necks are becoming more popular, Danuser said. Wear a shirt underneath of a contrasting color. A shawl collar or a half-zip works well as a light jacket when the weather is a little cool.

● Cardigans aren’t just for Mr. Rogers. Look for zippers and stand-up collars for an updated look.

● Silhouettes are getting trimmer, but you don’t have to wear your jeans rock-star tight. A straight leg or slight boot cut in a medium or dark wash works well for most people.

● Footwear doesn’t necessarily have to be fancy. Moccasins are still popular, Danuser said. For something a little different, try wallabies, which get better as they get beat up.

● Don’t limit vests to formal occasions. Try one over an oxford tucked into jeans.
