In the late 1960s, at the height of an era of civil unrest, Rieva Lesonsky became a conscientious objector. She refused to dissect frogs in her junior high classroom. She presented her case ardently to her biology teacher, who accepted Rieva’s defense and then sent her to the guidance office for career counseling.
