New city commission to have ‘vision’ role

Correction appended

The city of Columbia is accepting applications for the new Columbia Vision Commission, which will track, monitor and assist with implementing the community’s visioning process. The volunteer panel will conduct periodic reviews, issue an annual report, recommend implementation tasks and offer education and outreach programs.

The commission will consist of seven coordinating committee members and as many as five resource members, all appointed by the Columbia City Council.

Two members will be Boone County residents living outside Columbia.

Candidates for coordinating committee positions must have a demonstrated commitment to the visioning process. They will be evaluated on their ability to work with data, understand systemic relationships and work collaboratively as well as on their management skills, independence, existing memberships and contribution to diversity.

Resource members will be evaluated on the same criteria and would share their experience in areas such as data collection, fundraising, intergovernmental cooperation, management and process design.

Citizens and organizations can nominate candidates by providing that person’s contact information to the city clerk’s office at cityclerk@gocolumbiamo.com or 874-7207. Nominees will be asked to submit an application. Self-nominations also will be accepted. The deadline for nominations is noon Oct. 31.

Applications can be found at the city clerk’s office, or online at the city’s Web site, gocolumbiamo.com, under links to "city government," "boards and commissions" and "vacancies."

SECOND THOUGHTS: Friday, October 10, 2008

A news item yesterday about the city of Columbia accepting applications for the Columbia Vision Commission should have included the application deadline, which is Nov. 7.
