Cowboy story session, workshop today

A Heifer International "Cowboy Sharing" session and workshop will be held today at New Horizons United Methodist Church, 1020 S. El Chaparral Ave. The public is invited.

From 10 a.m. until noon, Heifer International cowboys from around the state will share stories about their adventures when, beginning in 1944, they transported livestock to Heifer projects in the United States and from the United States to countries overseas.

At 12:45 p.m., Missouri representative for Heifer International Carol Oliver will present information about the Heifer program in the United States and around the world.

Columbia CROP walk kicks off tomorrow

The Columbia CROP Hunger Walk will begin at 2 p.m. tomorrow at First Christian Church, Tenth and Walnut streets. Registration begins at 1 p.m.

At a recent recruiters’ rally, keynote speaker the Rev. Max Marble spoke of his hunger-related experiences as a child of missionary parents in India. Resources and training were provided to enlist walkers who will solicit sponsors for CROP, or Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.

The walk, which is still seeking volunteers, will provide resources for both local and worldwide needs. A fourth of the funds raised will be used by Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen and Russell Chapel Food Pantry. The remaining funds will be used by Church World Service or other agencies. The goal of the Columbia effort is attract 200 walkers to help raise $20,000.

Trinity Presbyterian effort honors Guthrie

Three members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Columbia recently designed and built a new deck at the Stubbins Memorial Family and Youth Center in Moberly and dedicated it to the memory of Trinity’s former parish associate.

Officially dedicated to the Rev. Franc Guthrie during a small ceremony for about 40 family and friends on Sept. 14, the new 16-foot-by-20-foot deck was built by Don Mueller, Turk Storvick and Steve Sheriff, all of Columbia and members of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Guthrie, who died Feb. 13, was Trinity’s pastoral associate for nine years.

Rocheport to honor pastor’s long service

The pastor of Rocheport United Methodist Church, the Rev. George Burgin, will celebrate his 54th year in the ministry at a special worship service 10 a.m. next Sunday at the Rocheport church.

Preaching will be the Rev. Larry Shores, senior pastor of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in San Antonio.Shores was the youth minister at Community United Methodist Church in Columbia from 1969 to 1972 while Burgin was senior pastor at Community Church. Friends are invited to attend.
