Midkiff muddies waters
for real environmentalists
Editor, the Tribune: Ken Midkiff’s Sept. 12 column makes the connection between chlorine and trihalomethanes. Good for him.

History decides if leaders
were right or wrong
Editor, the Tribune: Peeved again - here comes some BS from Bill Wickersham about a conference to prosecute our president for war crimes. You do know the Democratic VP nominee and other leading Democrats will go to the gallows with George W. Bush as accomplices.

Reverse Robin Hood
effect needs to stop
Editor, the Tribune: Some Republicans accuse Democrats of trying to redistribute wealth with tax-cut proposals. They call it the Robin Hood effect. What they refuse to acknowledge is that under the Bush administration, wealth is being redistributed from the middle class to those in powerful positions who manipulate the system for their personal gain.

Local projects should be
funded with local money
Editor, the Tribune: I read with dismay Hank Waters’ endorsement of earmarks and pork spending. To be fair, Hank would prefer bringing this out-of-control spending into the light of day. But the process is corrupt and would continue to be corrupt in the daylight. I advocate elimination of federal spending that benefits only one state, county or city and not the general welfare of the country.

Department did great job repairing trail after storms
Editor, the Tribune: As a daily four-mile walker on the MKT Trail for more than 20 years, I am very grateful to have such a great exercise spot available in Columbia. Today I need to express my gratitude for the fast and prompt job done by the Parks and Recreation Department to repair the damage done by recent torrential rains. It was greatly appreciated!

Waters should criticize
candidates’ ideas, not faith
Editor, the Tribune: I’ve always believed what a candidate intends to do for my state is what’s most important, not their religion. With his editorial endorsing Jay Nixon, Hank Waters appears to have employed some sort of religious litmus test.
Public not innocent in financial debacle
By GEORGE F. WILL
We are waist-deep in evasions because one cannot talk sense about the cultural
roots of the financial crisis without transgressing this cardinal principle of
politics: Never shall be heard a discouraging word about the public.
