Arts community wracked by pain of weak economy

The economic tsunami rocking everyone’s boat nowadays includes not just people who bolt fenders to cars or investment bankers who juggle numbers on a computer screen. The recession is roiling Columbia’s artists and dancers, as well as people who run galleries and those who manage not-for-profit groups.

Pack Matthews

A few mornings a week, Pack Matthews sits in Orr Street Studios on a platform that looks like a raised living room floor. Made portable with wheels and topped with a scrap of carpet, comfortable red velvet pillow and blanket, the platform supports Matthews’ posture as he sits, cross-legged, a pair of New Balance sneakers discarded on the floor. While he composes music on his computer, he prefers socked feet.
