For many women, the little black dress is the go-to item in the closet. “You can wear black any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it on almost any occasion. A little black frock is essential to a woman,” the iconic Christian Dior said in 1954.

EXCLAMATION POINTS
A few little things can go a long way

As I’ve said before, I love the little black dress. I own at least seven, with various hem lengths, necklines, sleeves and materials. True, there isn’t much color punctuating my closet, but it makes it incredibly easy to roll out of bed and throw something together in a few minutes.

Remember wallpaper?
The Associated Press

When it comes to fitness, you can’t believe everything you hear. What might work for one person might not work for another, and one person’s success can be misleading to another.

Working out together
The Associated Press
A workout partner can be great for motivation, but when your bedmate becomes your gymmate, special care might be needed. For better or worse, exercising together brings the relationship into the workout, says Jenny Susser, a clinical sport psychologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Ninebark stands out in the foliage crowd

I think of myself as a natural foliage junkie, but I sometimes wonder whether I have become hooked on plants’ vegetative qualities because there is increasingly more of the good stuff out there.

Scandinavian heritage lives on in Minneapolis museum

MINNEAPOLIS - Neither of my grandmothers ever became comfortable speaking English, so they continued to speak Swedish or Norwegian until they died. Like many people from Minnesota and the Dakotas, my mother had a noticeable Norwegian accent. The female sheriff’s accent in the movie "Fargo" is not far removed from the accent of some of my relatives.

Carolina climb
By KEN MIDKIFF Special to the Tribune
Usually when I go to South Carolina, I head for the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. Since most of South Carolina’s eastern border meets the ocean, there are lots of beaches to choose from. If there’s one thing Missouri lacks, it is an ocean, and the lure of the sea draws me.
