Police catch up with shooting suspect
Published Friday, November 30, 2007
An anonymous tip led to the arrest today in Fulton of a man suspected in a shooting last month in Columbia that injured two people.
At 7:30 a.m., Fulton police arrested Malcolm D. Redmon, 24, on warrants charging him with two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with an October shooting on Park Avenue, Columbia police Capt. Brad Nelson said in a news release. The arrest was the result of an earlier CrimeStoppers tip, Nelson said. Columbia police then passed that information to Fulton officers. The arrest comes two days after Columbia police announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to Redmon’s arrest. Nelson said that police suspect Redmon in other recent shootings, but declined to elaborate. Nelson said today that several callers provided information about Redmon since the reward was announced. Police yesterday searched a duplex on Derby Ridge Drive looking for him, and Nelson said police also responded to other locations. "It’s obvious Redmon knew we were looking for him, and for that reason was moving around quite a bit," Nelson said. This morning’s caller told police Redmon was in Fulton, but did not provide an exact address. Fulton police located and arrested Redmon at a residence there, Nelson said. The caller that led police to Fulton would be eligible for the reward, Nelson said, classifying the arrest as a high priority. "We certainly are happy to have Redmon off the streets." Redmon this morning was being interviewed by police at the Columbia Police Department, Nelson said. Officers on Oct. 9 responded to the 500 block of Park Avenue, north of downtown, after reports of gunfire during a fistfight that attracted dozens of onlookers. Two men were shot - one in the jaw and shoulder and the other in the leg, police said. An eyewitness positively identified Redmon as the gunman, and several anonymous tipsters also identified him, police said. According to court records, Redmon has been convicted of four felonies in Boone County since 2001: stealing, sale of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and second-degree drug trafficking. Redmon is on parole and was last released from prison in November 2006.
