Chiefs could trade
Green to Dolphins
Texans release embattled QB Carr.
Published Saturday, March 24, 2007
Signs are mounting that the Kansas City Chiefs will trade quarterback Trent Green to the Miami Dolphins. According to the Kansas City Star, a source indicated a deal between the Chiefs and Dolphins could be reached as soon as the annual NFL meetings, which begin tomorrow in Phoenix. But the possible trade was suddenly complicated by other developments yesterday. The Detroit Lions contacted the Chiefs this week and were interested in discussing a deal for Green. Chiefs President and General Manager Carl Peterson will meet with his Lions counterpart, Matt Millen, in Phoenix. The Dolphins are also reportedly interested in former Houston quarterback David Carr, who became expendable this week when the Texans traded for Matt Schaub. The Texans waived Carr yesterday. The Chiefs granted Green, their starter for the last six seasons, permission to find a new home contingent on the Chiefs’ ability to reach agreement on trade terms with that team. The Chiefs and Dolphins have yet to reach that agreement. Green’s agent, Jim Steiner, said yesterday that Green’s preference was to play for Miami. The Dolphins are in need of a starting quarterback and run the same offensive system as the Chiefs. Green has worked with Miami Coach Cam Cameron and quarterbacks coach Terry Shea and has credited both for advancing his career. Detroit would also appear to be a logical landing place for Green. The Lions’ offensive coordinator is Mike Martz, who once worked with Green with the Rams. ● TOWED AWAY: The Texans waived Carr, the first draft pick in franchise history five years ago, and running back Domanick Williams. The Texans never have had a winning record, and Carr often was the scapegoat. He completed 60 percent of his passes but also threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times in five seasons. Williams, formerly Domanick Davis, is Houston’s career rushing leader with 3,195 yards. He spent all of last season on injured reserve with a knee injury. ● BACK IN TH STABLE: The Seattle Seahawks have re-signed Bobby Engram to a multiyear contract even though they already have a stable of younger, richer receivers. Team President Tim Ruskell said that experience and Engram’s rapport with wide receivers Darrell Jackson, Deion Branch and Nate Burleson, among others, were the main reasons the 34-year-old is coming back for a seventh season in Seattle. ● SAFETY ISSUES: The Dallas Cowboys signed former Seattle safety Ken Hamlin. Terms weren’t released. Hamlin had three sacks and two interceptions for the Seahawks last year, a season in which he played all 16 games after life-threatening head injuries from a street fight in 2005. He was Seattle’s second-round pick in 2003 and started 52 of 54 regular-season games he played in. ● JETS LAND BACKUP: The New York Jets signed free-agent quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo. Tuiasosopo spent his first six NFL seasons with Oakland, which drafted him in the second round in 2001. He appeared in 11 games with the Raiders, including two starts, and completed 48 of 88 passes for 550 yards and two touchdowns. The athletic 28-year-old also rushed 15 times for 68 yards. He’s expected to compete with second-year quarterback Kellen Clemens for the No. 2 job behind starter Chad Pennington. ● REUNITED: The Falcons signed fifth-year veteran quarterback Chris Redman, who played for new Coach Bobby Petrino at the University of Louisville. The 6-foot-2, 223-pound Redman was a third-round draft pick by Baltimore in 2000. In four seasons with the Ravens, Redman played in 10 games and made six starts. He completed 106 of 198 passes for 1,111 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions and was 3-3 as a starter. ● TRADE WINDS: Linebacker Al Wilson, a defensive captain for the Denver Broncos since 2001 and five-time Pro Bowler, could be traded. NFL.com reported the Broncos and New York Giants are in "substantive and heated" trade talks about Wilson. The report said the Lions and Eagles are also in the hunt for Wilson.
