New approach needed to solve border issues
Published Thursday, June 21, 2007
Editor, the Tribune: While agonizing over what we should do about the illegal immigrants from Mexico - whether to beef up border patrols, build a wall, etc. - we are seeing symptoms but not looking for a cure to the disease. Why do we not have the same problem with Canadians on our northern border? I am no expert on the economy or managing large populations, but it seems easily evident that the reason so many are willing to enter the United States illegally from the south is for more income than they can get in Mexico. If we are truly interested in solving the problem, the United States should be working with the Mexican government to improve their economic situation. If the media in the United States would focus on this rather than on Band-aids on the border, we could conceivably pressure our own government in this direction. It would save us tax dollars, make us excellent neighbors and prevent a truckload of agony over the problem.
