Scherzer promoted to Double-A

Former Missouri pitcher Max Scherzer’s stint in Single-A baseball was short and successful. After three starts for the Visalia, Calif., Oaks of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm system, Scherzer has been promoted to Double-A Mobile, Ala.

Scherzer, the team’s first-round pick in 2006, agreed to a $4.3 million contract on May 30. In three appearances for Visalia, Scherzer allowed one run and five hits in 17 innings. He had 30 strikeouts and two walks.

MU adds another football commitment

The Missouri football team has added its ninth verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class, getting a pledge from Houston area defensive lineman Jimmy Burge, according to Rivals.com.

Burge, a Class 5 all-district defensive tackle at Stratford High School, committed to the Tigers over the weekend, the Web site reported.

Stratford Coach Eliot Allen was unavailable for comment this morning.

Burge told Rivals.com that he was born in Columbia, his father attended MU and his grandparents still live in Columbia.

He also has offers from TCU, Stanford, Houston, Boise State and Fresno State.

Burge is the fifth player to give MU a commitment this month.

Central Methodist soccer signs forward

Linda Daniels of Johns F. Hodge High School in St. James signed a letter of intent to play for the Central Methodist soccer team, Eagles Coach Curtis Stelzer announced.

Daniels had four goals and six assists for the Class 1 District 11 champion.

"Linda will add speed and depth to our midfield and forward lines," Stelzer said. "Being the captain of her high school team for the last two years will help bring some much needed leadership to the Lady Eagles."

McElroy makes hole-in-one

Ryan McElroy made a hole-in-one yesterday at A.L. Gustin Golf Course.

McElroy aced the 150-yard second hole with a 9-iron. Foy Trent and Susan Sczepanski witnessed the shot.

MMAC swimmers compete in KC

The Mid-Missouri Aquatic Club Wavemakers competed in the Dad’s Day Dunk over the weekend in Kansas City.

Kortney Betz placed fourth in the 200-meter freestyle, fifth in the 100 free, sixth in the 100 backstroke and 50 free and seventh in the 50 back. Petey Lattimer placed seventh in the 800 free. Jamie Allen placed eighth in the 100 back.
