NATIONAL LEAGUE Cubs 6, Reds 0: In Cincinnati, Carlos Zambrano became the majors’ first 14-game winner. Zambrano pitched into the eighth inning and added three hits as the Chicago Cubs climbed within a half-game of division-leading Milwaukee. The Brewers lost to St. Louis 9-5, making the NL Central the tightest it’s been since opening day. The Cardinals moved within six games of Milwaukee in third. "This is the best stretch I’ve ever had," said Zambrano (14-7), who has won four straight and seven of his last eight. "I feel confident and comfortable. I’ve been hitting my spots and throwing more strikes. My arm slot feels good." Derrek Lee homered for the third time in four days for Chicago, which finished a 4-2 trip against the Cardinals and Reds. ● Marlins 8, Giants 5: In San Francisco, Barry Bonds went 1 for 4 with an infield single on the final day of the Giants’ homestand, failing to come close to a home run. He remains one homer shy of tying Hank Aaron’s record. The Giants open a road trip tomorrow night in Los Angeles. ● Mets 5, Nationals 0 (4½ inn.): In New York, John Maine shut down Washington, David Wright drove in two runs and the Mets salvaged a four-game split in a game shortened by rain. ● Phillies 5, Pirates 1: In Philadelphia, Jimmy Rollins had three hits and Kyle Kendrick (5-1) tossed seven strong innings as the Phillies completed a three-game sweep. ● Padres 18, Astros 11: In Houston, Mike Cameron and Adrian Gonzalez hit two-run homers during an 11-run first inning off Jason Jennings (2-7). ● Rockies 9, Dodgers 6: In Denver, Matt Holliday homered and drove in three runs and Ubaldo Jimenez (1-0) went six innings for his first major-league victory. Chad Billingsley (7-1) allowed four runs in 41/3 innings, losing for the first time since last Sept. 16 against San Diego. ● Braves 14, Diamondbacks 0: In Phoenix, Chipper Jones drove in five runs, Tim Hudson (11-5) allowed three hits in seven innings and the Braves ended the Diamondbacks’ eight-game winning streak. AMERICAN LEAGUE Angels 13, Tigers 4: In Anaheim, Calif., Gary Matthews Jr. drove in three runs and Garret Anderson and Casey Kotchman each had two RBI as the Angels completed a sweep of the Tigers. Los Angeles outscored Detroit 34-13 in the series and had at least 10 runs in three consecutive games for the second time in the franchise’s 47-year history. ● Devil Rays 5, Red Sox 2: In St. Petersburg, Fla., Dioner Navarro, B.J. Upton and Carlos Pena homered during a five-run seventh inning as the Devil Rays stopped an eight-game losing streak. ● Twins 4, Indians 1: In Cleveland, Josh Barfield made two errors on one play to help Minnesota score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Dennys Reyes (2-1) pitched 11/3 innings to get the win and Joe Nathan worked the ninth for his 22nd save. ● Mariners 14, Athletics 10: In Seattle, Ben Broussard, playing for the ejected Richie Sexson, hit a two-run homer in the seventh to tie it and Jason Ellison scored the go-ahead run on an errant throw an inning later. Kenji Johjima led off the bottom of the eighth with a double just fair down the left-field line off Huston Street (2-2). Jose Lopez laid down a bunt to advance pinch-runner Ellison him to third, but Street threw the ball wide to first, allowing pinch-Ellison to race. ● Yankees 10, Orioles 6: In Baltimore, Johnny Damon had three hits, scored four runs and had two RBI and New York ended the Orioles’ six-game winning streak. Alex Rodriguez, seeking his 500th home run, went 0 for 2 with a run-scoring grounder and three walks for the Yankees. Chien-Ming Wang (12-5) gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings to help New York pull within four of the wild-card lead. ● Blue Jays 4, White Sox 1: In Chicago, Lyle Overbay broke a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for Toronto, which has won six of its last eight. Shaun Marcum (7-4) gave up two hits and struck out eight in eight innings to outpitch Chicago’s Javier Vazquez (8-6).
