Joplin man wounds deputy, kills himself

JOPLIN (AP) - A man killed himself after firing on two Jasper County Sheriff’s deputies, wounding one of them.

The shooting happened Friday night after a deputy went to a Joplin residence to serve a notice of a restraining order to a roommate of 44-year-old Roscoe Tallant, said Jasper County sheriff’s Capt. Jerry Gilbert.

"When the deputy attempted to serve the papers, the suspect drew a shotgun out of a vehicle, pointed it at him and threatened to kill him," Gilbert said.

The deputy took cover and called for backup. When a second deputy arrived, Gilbert said, Tallant shot out the car’s window, wounding the deputy in the arm and forehead.

Gilbert said Tallant then fled the scene and shot himself when he ran into a Joplin police officer 50 yards away.

The deputy was treated at a hospital and released.
