MLB roundup

AMERICAN LEAGUE

White Sox 4, Red Sox 2: In Boston, Manager Terry Francona looks at his club’s 11 hits and thinks about the one that just missed.

"If Manny’s ball goes a foot the other way … ," Francona said of the long drive by Manny Ramirez that was caught about a foot from the bullpen fence. "We came up empty. It hurts."

A.J. Pierzynski drove in three runs and had three of Chicago’s six hits last night, making Boston pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka pay for a career-high six walks.

Javier Vazquez (7-5) allowed two runs, nine hits and two walks, striking out five in 61/3 innings to win his fourth consecutive decision. Paul Konerko hit his 21st homer for the White Sox, and Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

Matsuzaka (11-7) allowed three runs and two hits while striking out six. But he bunched his walks together - two in the first and three in the sixth - and both times Pierzynski was there to drive in the runners.

Blue Jays 3, Yankees 2: In New York, Toronto rallied for three runs in the seventh inning off Chien-Ming Wang (10-5) to end the Yankees’ five-game winning streak. Dustin McGowan (6-5) gave up four hits in seven innings, and Jeremy Accardo worked around a leadoff single by Alex Rodriguez in the ninth for his 14th save.

Indians 7, Rangers 5: In Arlington, Texas, C.C. Sabathia became the major leagues’ first 13-game winner despite another shaky start, getting help from Grady Sizemore’s long tiebreaking home run that led off the fifth against Kameron Loe (5-8).

Tigers 4, Twins 3: In Minneapolis, Brandon Inge’s 10th-inning double off Joe Nathan (3-2) let Detroit complete a three-game sweep of the defending AL Central champions.

Angels 3, Devil Rays 0: In St. Petersburg, Fla., Kelvim Escobar (11-3) won his career-best fifth consecutive decision to help the AL West-leading Angels avoid a three-game sweep. Garret Anderson hit a two-run single in the sixth off Andy Sonnanstine (1-5) to put the Angels ahead 3-0.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Padres 1, Phillies 0: In San Diego, Chris Young (9-3) gave up two hits in seven innings and Brian Giles’ RBI double in the third provided all the offense. Heath Bell worked the eighth before Trevor Hoffman finished the four-hitter for his 27th save in 29 chances.

Brewers 10, Diamondbacks 1: In Milwaukee, rookie Yovani Gallardo (2-1) pitched six shutout innings in place of injured Ben Sheets and Tony Graffanino homered for Milwaukee. Livan Hernandez (5-6) pitched 51/3 innings for Arizona and was charged with six runs and eight hits.

Reds 7, Marlins 5: In Miami, Ryan Freel hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning off Armando Benitez (2-5) and Cincinnati won its fourth straight game after trailing 3-0 and 5-3. Todd Coffey (2-1) pitched 12/3 scoreless innings, and David Weathers got three outs for his 19th save.

Mets 13, Dodgers 9: In Los Angeles, Carlos Delgado and Ramon Castro hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning and Carlos Beltran added a solo shot in the eighth for New York, which led 6-0 after the top of the first.

Nationals 5, Rockies 4 (10 inn.): In Washington, D’Angelo Jimenez’s first hit in 20 at-bats as a pinch hitter this season was a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning off LaTroy Hawkins (1-5). Jon Rauch (4-2) pitched a perfect 10th for the Nationals.
