Scuffling at Chiefs’ practice
Cowboys WR Owens rests sore hamstring.
Published Thursday, August 2, 2007
A fan who yelled encouragement at a player for fighting got an earful from Kansas City Coach Herm Edwards. Afterward, the fan did a good job of disappearing into the crowd. The Chiefs were nearing the end of a rough and very physical morning practice yesterday that had already caused tempers to boil when Will Svitek, a backup offensive tackle known to have a short fuse, briefly scuffled with another player. As Svitek backed away, a man sitting with a couple of hundred other spectators on risers at the edge of the field hollered, "Way to go, Will." Edwards, with an annoyed look, immediately turned his head toward the crowd and hollered back. "Way to go? That’s no way to go," he said in a voice that could be heard across the field. "He just got kicked out of the game! Do you think that’s the way to go?" Afterward, Edwards said he was trying to send a message to his team, not the fan. "I don’t want players to think that all of a sudden it’s good to fight, ’cause it’s never good to fight," he said. "Bad things always happen." ● T.O. WATCH: Terrell Owens got another day to rest his sore hamstring when he sat out both of the Cowboys’ practices. Coach Wade Phillips said Owens was sore - not injured. "He doesn’t have a hamstring problem," Phillips said. Owens, wearing shades and a team cap, didn’t respond to reporters while walking off the field after the afternoon session. He also refused to comment in the morning when he signed autographs. Owens was at practice in uniform Tuesday but was on the field without shoulder pads or a helmet after being told by Phillips to take it easy. ● ALREADY INJURED: Randy Moss left practice yesterday with an apparent upper leg injury. During an 11-on-11 passing drill about halfway through the Patriots’ afternoon session, the only practice of the day, the wide receiver reached into the end zone for a ball thrown by Tom Brady. The pass was incomplete, and Moss immediately went to the sideline. A trainer applied an ice pack and wrap to the wide receiver’s upper left leg, and Moss didn’t return to practice. The ice pack and wrapping were taken off before the team left the field, and Moss walked off under his own power. Patriots Coach Bill Belichick had a brief discussion with head trainer Jim Whelan and left the field without talking to reporters. No announcement was made about Moss’ condition. ● NO DEAL: The Giants won’t renegotiate Michael Strahan’s $4 million contract to persuade the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end to stop mulling retirement and play this season. "I don’t want to get into negotiating in the media," Co-Owner John Mara said as Strahan’s holdout entered its sixth day. "He is under contract, and I think you all know what our position is on that. I don’t want to make any statements on that." Mara said he believes the 35-year-old Strahan will eventually decide to play, but he said the team was prepared to move on without him. Veteran defensive end Simeon Rice took a physical for the Giants and met with Coach Tom Coughlin and General Manager Jerry Reese after practice. There was no immediate word on whether Rice, who is No. 2 in sacks among active players behind Strahan, would be offered a contract. Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
