Harrisburg’s Heuer places second in nation

Harrisburg’s Haley Heuer, 13, placed second in the nation in the discus and sixth in the shot put at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Knoxville, Tenn.

Heuer threw the discus 107 feet, 5 inches - just 3 inches behind champion Brittany Mann of Beverly Hills, Mich. - and tossed the shot put 38-2. This Heuer’s first year competing in track and field.

Rising Stars win Show-Me gold

Columbia’s Rising Stars 12-and-under boys basketball team coached by Derek Cook won the recreational bracket at the Show-Me State Games, beating the Gatorz of Springfield 63-51 in the championship game.

Team members include Conner Cook, Jemaun Gardner, Jared Hyler, Leo Terzopoulos, Nick White, Jamin Miller, Brian Underwood, Cecil Williams, Jordan Reiske, Trevon Stuart, Parker Adams and Brad Meister. Yakup Demirefe served as an assistant coach.

MAC swim team has success

The Missouri Athletic Center swimming club placed second in the small-team division and 14th overall in the 36-team Missouri Valley Swimming Long Course Championship meet in Lenexa, Kan.

Levi Hanks won the boys 13-14 800-meter freestyle, took second in the 1,500-meter free with a time of 18 minutes, 21.95 seconds and third in the 400 free in 4:39.99, which qualified him for the Central Zone Championships. Nathan Hanks won the 50 backstroke in 40.09 and finished second in the 100 back, fifth in the 200 free and sixth in the 100 free. Emma Lightner placed sixth in the 100 back and seventh in the 50 back.

At the Show-Me State Games last weekend, Rachel Koppelman placed second in the 50, 200, 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events in the 15-18 age group. Megan Schaffer took second in the 15-18 200 back and third in the 100 back. Anna Wilcoxon placed third in the 200 individual medley. Amanda Morford won the 50 free, 50 back, 100 back and 100 IM.

Rattlers place second in St. Louis

The Diamond Rattlers 10-and-under competitive baseball team placed second at the American Amateur Youth Baseball Alliance World Series in St. Louis. The Rattlers, made up of players from Ashland, Boonville, Columbia and Jefferson City, went 6-1 at the tournament, losing to the St. Louis Sharks in the championship game to finish their season with a 47-11 record.

Team members include Keaton Barnes, Sam Bowles, Nick Cunningham, Sam Giles, Nate Isenberg, Ethan O’Keefe, Cody Stegman, Taylor Thompson, Grant Townsend and Logan Twehous. The team is coached by Brian Bowles, Craig Isenberg, Tammy Thompson and Janel Twehous.

DBLL softball teams win tourneys

The Daniel Boone Little League National 9-10-year-old softball team recently won the state tournament in DeSoto. The Daniel Boone team went 4-0, beating Perryville 11-1 in the championship game. Team members include Katie Cook, Taylor Dillard, Lauren Hartley, Morgan Hawkins, Madison Kent, Lydia Murphy, Hayden Niemeyer, Carly Offerdahl, Maddie Phillips, Reilly Strong, Kitrell Sublett and Madison Wipfler.

The Daniel Boone Little League 11-12 softball team won its district tournament by beating Mexico in a best-of-three series. Team members include Alyssa Fancher, Cassidy Janicek, Angie Kern, Allison Linder, Mackenzie Mayer, Rachel Muzzy, Samantha Nielsen, Makenzie Skrabal, Kennedy Smith, Annie Stella and Sydney Strong.
