MLB roundup

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers 4, Mets 2 (13 inn.); Giants 3, Dodgers 1: History was put on hold as Tom Glavine failed in his first chance to win No. 300 and Barry Bonds remained one homer behind Hank Aaron.

Glavine was pretty close last night in Milwaukee, handing a one-run lead to the Mets’ usually reliable bullpen, which blew it. Bonds remained one home run away from tying Aaron’s all-time record in Los Angeles.

"It’s a disappointing night," said Glavine, whose next chance at the mark is on Sunday in Chicago. "I don’t know if it’s easier to have it go away right away or when you’ve got to sit there and watch."

But Glavine didn’t blame his teammates.

"They’ve helped me more than they’ve hurt me," Glavine said.

David Wright scored on a sacrifice fly by Moises Alou to give the Mets a 2-1 lead in the sixth. But in the eighth, Aaron Heilman allowed a leadoff single to J.J. Hardy and, after Ryan Braun flied out, Pedro Feliciano came in and hit Prince Fielder with a pitch. Guillermo Mota relieved, and Bill Hall greeted him with a ground-rule double to left that scored Hardy with the tying run.

Glavine will have to haul his friends and family to Wrigley Field this weekend for another shot at one of baseball’s most cherished milestones.

Bonds won’t have to wait quite as long for another shot at history after his night. He stayed stuck at 754 home runs when he went 0 for 2 with two walks in Los Angeles where he was booed at every turn.

Braves 12, Astros 4: In Atlanta, Kelly Johnson had four hits, including two homers, and Jeff Francoeur and Brian McCann hit home runs. Johnson drove in five runs and McCann knocked in four.

Cubs 7, Phillies 3: In Chicago, Jacque Jones had an RBI double in the sixth inning to lead the Cubs, who went 17-9 in July.

Diamondbacks 4, Padres 0: In San Diego, Chris Young and Stephen Drew hit two-run homers for Arizona. Brandon Webb (10-8) allowed three hits in seven innings while striking out seven and walking two.

Rockies 6, Marlins 3: In front of a sparse crowd in Miami, Aaron Cook allowed five hits in 72/3 innings to win his third straight start for Colorado. Few witnessed it. The announced attendance was 11,534, but actual attendance was likely less than 3,000.

Nationals 6, Reds 3: In Washington, Ryan Zimmerman’s three-run double was the biggest hit in the Nats’ big fifth inning. Rookie Matt Chico (5-6) earned the victory by going five innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 16, White Sox 3: In New York, Alex Rodriguez didn’t hit a home run. Almost all the other Yankees did. A-Rod stayed stuck on 499 homers, but Hideki Matsui homered twice, and Johnny Damon, Jorge Posada, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera, Robinson Cano and Shelley Duncan hit one apiece to back Mike Mussina (6-7).

Orioles 5, Red Sox 3: In Boston, Erik Bedard (11-4) allowed two hits over six innings to win his seventh straight decision despite two homers by David Ortiz. Brian Roberts homered on the first pitch from Josh Beckett (13-5) and added an RBI double in the Orioles’ three-run third

Angels 8, Mariners 0: In Seattle, Gary Matthews Jr. hit two home runs, his first in six weeks, and John Lackey (13-6) threw a seven-hitter in his first complete game of the season.

Athletics 7, Tigers 3: In Oakland, Kurt Suzuki and Jack Cust hit two-run singles in the sixth inning to help Oakland snap a four-game losing streak. Dan Haren (13-3) was the beneficiary of the four-run rally and outpitched fellow All-Star Justin Verlander (11-4) to win his third straight start.

Rangers 3, Indians 1: In Cleveland, Brandon McCarthy (5-7) won for the first time in more than two months, beating Fausto Carmona (13-5).

Blue Jays 2, Devil Rays 0: In St. Petersburg, Fla., former Devil Rays bat boy Jesse Litsch (4-4) threw 62/3 shutout innings against his old team.
